CapChar thermal battery
Heat batteries for biomass heat recovery
Make heat now. Use it later.
CapChar’s proprietary heat battery is a thermal energy storage system designed to capture heat from pyrolysis and release it later for suitable drying and heating applications. Storage capacity and usable heat output are specified around the heat source and demand.
Discuss your project ↗Store energy in the form you need.
For a drying or heating application, useful energy is heat. Our approach stores that energy thermally in a proprietary battery.
CapChar’s battery is designed to recover heat from pyrolysis and hold it for later use. A separate air circuit is intended to deliver useful heat to the application.
The installation is designed around safe operating temperatures, airflows and the separation of process exhaust from the air delivered to the end use.
The application defines the battery.
Charging
Heat source temperature, available thermal power and the hours of heat production determine the charging opportunity.
Storage
The quantity of usable heat depends on the operating temperature range, store size, insulation and standing losses.
Discharge
Required temperature, airflow, heat demand and duty cycle determine how long the store can serve the application.
Start with a real heat use.
Feedstock and product drying
Assess using captured heat to prepare material for processing or dry suitable products such as wood fuels.
Site heating
Explore heat demand in suitable buildings and rural operations, with distribution and air quality designed for the use.
Future development
Electrical charging and mobile heat applications are development opportunities. Their availability and specification must be confirmed for each project.
What we need to size a store.
- Heat source and temperature profile
- Daily and seasonal heat availability
- Required outlet temperature and airflow
- Demand profile and desired discharge duration
- Location, connections and site constraints
Next step
Let’s match heat production to demand.

Heat battery questions.
What is a heat battery?
A heat battery stores energy as heat for later use. CapChar’s proprietary heat battery is a form of thermal energy storage designed to capture pyrolysis heat and release it for suitable drying or heating applications.
How is a heat battery different from an electrical battery?
An electrical battery stores energy that can be delivered as electricity. A heat battery delivers stored thermal energy. CapChar’s proposed applications use the discharged energy as heat rather than converting it back into electricity.
How long can a CapChar heat battery supply heat?
Discharge duration depends on usable stored energy and the application’s heat demand. Source temperature, store size, heat losses, required outlet temperature and airflow must be specified before CapChar can give a duration.
Can the battery be transported on site?
Mobile heat applications are being developed. Their availability, safety requirements and specification must be confirmed for each project.
