Biochar Carbon Credits

Carbon removal that starts with biomass and ends with carbon stored for the long term.

Biochar carbon credits represent quantified carbon removal achieved by converting eligible biomass into stable biochar and placing it into approved long-term uses. Explore how credits work, what makes them credible and how organisations can participate in this growing market.

Understanding the market

What are biochar carbon credits?

Biochar is a carbon-rich material produced by heating biomass in an oxygen-limited environment through a process called pyrolysis.

Some of the carbon absorbed by plants during growth can be retained in the resulting biochar. When suitable biochar is used in ways that keep this carbon stored over the long term, the process can deliver measurable carbon dioxide removal.

A biochar carbon credit generally represents one tonne of net carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO₂e) removed, calculated under a specified methodology and accounting for relevant project emissions.

Not every tonne of biochar generates the same number of credits. The outcome depends on feedstock, production conditions, carbon stability, emissions and end use.

From biomass to verified removal

How biochar carbon credits are created

Credible carbon removal requires more than producing biochar. The process needs measurement, evidence and independent assessment against a defined standard.

01 / PRODUCTION

Convert biomass

Eligible biomass is processed through pyrolysis, producing biochar alongside recoverable thermal energy. Feedstock and operating conditions are documented.

02 / ACCOUNTING

Calculate net removal

Biochar properties, carbon stability, production emissions and eligible end uses are assessed under the applicable carbon removal methodology.

03 / VERIFICATION

Issue and track credits

Project evidence is reviewed under the relevant programme requirements. Eligible removals can then be issued and tracked through a registry to support transparency and prevent double counting.

Buying with confidence

What should buyers look for?

Carbon removal credits differ in methodology, documentation, delivery arrangements and underlying project risks. Buyers should examine the evidence behind each credit rather than relying on a headline carbon removal claim.

Carbon removal is not the same as emissions avoidance.

Biochar credits should be assessed on the net carbon removed and durably stored, not simply on the emissions a project may have avoided.

  • Durability and permanence How long is the carbon expected to remain stored, and what evidence supports that estimate?
  • Measurement and verification Which methodology is used, what data is collected and what independent checks are required?
  • Lifecycle emissions Have relevant emissions from biomass sourcing, processing and transport been accounted for?
  • Traceability and registry records Can credits be uniquely identified, transferred and retired without double counting?
  • Delivery and claims Are the credits already issued or contracted for future delivery, and what claims can the buyer legitimately make?
Commercial considerations

How much do biochar carbon credits cost?

Biochar carbon credit prices vary between projects and suppliers. There is no single universal price.

Pricing can reflect the cost of biomass collection, pyrolysis equipment, energy, biochar testing, monitoring, verification, credit issuance and long-term project operation.

The quantity purchased, delivery date, certification programme, project location and available evidence can also influence the commercial terms.

Buyers should compare credits on quality, net removal, delivery certainty and documentation as well as price.

CapChar's role

Building the infrastructure behind biochar carbon removal

CapChar develops integrated biomass pyrolysis, heat recovery and thermal storage systems, alongside digital carbon-recording infrastructure.

Our approach connects physical biochar production with the monitoring, accounting and documentation needed to support credible carbon removal projects.

This includes the published Biochar Carbon Code , digital monitoring and a public registry.

CapChar does not currently sell carbon credits directly. We welcome enquiries from organisations exploring biochar carbon removal and potential credit purchasing opportunities.

Frequently asked questions

Biochar carbon credits: FAQs

How many carbon credits does one tonne of biochar produce?

There is no fixed conversion. The number of credits depends on the biochar's carbon content and stability, eligible end use and the lifecycle emissions deducted under the relevant methodology. Credits are calculated from net tonnes of CO₂e removed, not simply from tonnes of biochar produced.

Are biochar carbon credits permanent?

Biochar can retain carbon for long periods, but durability depends on its properties and use. Credible methodologies apply defined tests, calculations and requirements to substantiate the quantity and expected duration of storage.

Are biochar carbon credits the same as carbon offsets?

Biochar credits generally represent carbon dioxide removal, while the wider voluntary carbon market also includes credits based on emissions reductions or avoidance. How a credit can be used in a corporate climate claim depends on the applicable reporting framework and claim rules.

Can companies buy biochar carbon credits in the UK?

Organisations can explore biochar carbon removal purchases from projects and suppliers, including those operating in the UK. Availability, verification status and delivery arrangements vary, so buyers should assess individual projects and contracts.

Does CapChar sell biochar carbon credits?

CapChar develops the technology and carbon-recording infrastructure that supports biochar carbon removal projects. We do not currently sell carbon credits directly, but welcome enquiries from prospective buyers and project developers.
